The NDIS, or National Disability Insurance Scheme, is a government-funded program that pays for support and services for Australians living with a permanent disability. It works by giving you a personalised plan with funding you can use to get the help you actually need, whether that is support at home, getting out in the community, or working toward your own goals. If you are in the Illawarra and wondering where to start, you are not alone, and this post will walk you through everything you need to know.
Who can access the NDIS?
Community participation support is funding that helps you take part in social, recreational, and community activities. It covers the cost of a support worker being there with you so you can do things you might not be able to do safely or confidently on your own.
You apply through the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), which is the government body that runs the scheme. If your application is approved, you will be invited to a planning meeting where you talk through your goals and what kind of support you need.
What does an NDIS plan actually include?
Your NDIS plan is a written document that outlines your goals and the funding set aside to help you reach them. The funding is split into 3 budget categories: core supports, capacity building supports, and capital supports.
Core supports cover your everyday needs, things like personal care, community participation, and household assistance. Capacity building is about growing your skills and independence over time. Capital covers bigger items like equipment or home modifications. Not everyone gets funding in every category. Your plan is based on what is reasonable and necessary for your situation.
How do you actually use your NDIS funding?
Once your plan is approved, you choose how to manage your funding. You can self-manage, use a plan manager, or have the NDIA manage it for you. Many people in the Illawarra choose plan management because it gives you more choice in providers without the admin falling entirely on you.
From there, you find support providers you want to work with and start using your funding. You are not locked in. If a provider is not the right fit, you can change. Your plan is also reviewed regularly so it can grow with you as your needs change.
What kind of support can you get in the Illawarra?
The Illawarra has a good range of NDIS providers, and the types of support available are broader than many people realise. Common supports include personal care, help around the home, community nursing, travel assistance, and supported independent living.
If you want to get out and connect with your community, there is funding for that too. Our NDIS community participation support covers things like joining local activities, building social connections, and getting out and about in Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, and the wider region.
For people who need more support with where they live, options like supported independent living or short-term and respite accommodation can be part of your plan too.
What if you are not sure whether you are eligible?
A lot of people put off applying because they are not sure if they will qualify, or they find the process a bit overwhelming, that is completely understandable. The NDIS paperwork and planning process can feel like a lot when you are already managing day to day.
The honest answer is that the best way to find out is to make an enquiry. You can call the NDIA directly on 1800 800 110, or speak to a local provider who knows the process well. We work with NDIS participants across the Illawarra and are happy to talk you through what to expect, even before you have a plan in place.
Getting your head around the NDIS takes time, and it is okay to have questions. The scheme is designed to give you real choice in how you live your life, and the right support can make a genuine difference. If you are in the Illawarra and ready to take the next step, we are here to help.
