Your first personal care appointment in the Illawarra starts with us getting to know you, not a checklist. We visit your home, ask about your usual routine, and talk through what kind of help you actually want with things like showering, dressing, or getting around safely. There is no rush and nothing is forced. Our whole aim for that first visit is to build trust and work out what support should look like for you specifically.
How we begin that first visit?
We start by introducing ourselves and asking about your usual morning or evening flow. From there, we check what tasks you would like a hand with, and we listen to your goals and interests so we understand what matters to you beyond the task list. Nothing physical happens until you feel ready for it. If you’re already getting help around the home from us, we build on what we know about your space already, so this doesn’t feel like starting over.
What personal care support can include?
This is what we mean when we talk about our personal care support services, though it looks a little different for everyone.
Showering, grooming, and getting dressed
For many people, this is where support makes the biggest difference to how the morning goes. We help at whatever pace suits you, and we adjust as your needs change.
Moving safely around your home
Some people want a hand with transfers, mobility aids, or simply feeling steadier on their feet indoors. Safety comes first, but so does letting you move at your own pace.
Eating, drinking, and more complex needs
If eating or drinking needs support, we work that into your routine gently. If your needs are more involved, we’re set up for that level of high-intensity support too, and where health care overlaps with personal care, our nursing team can step in.
How we prepare you for what comes next?
We do not expect much from you before we arrive. It helps if you have your NDIS plan details on hand, and it can be worth thinking ahead about which parts of your day feel hardest to manage alone. Some people like to write down a few questions beforehand, and we welcome that. Wherever we can, we keep the same support worker coming back, because familiarity tends to matter more than almost anything else once support becomes part of your week.
What happens if the fit is not quite right?
Your first appointment is also a chance to see whether the match feels right for both of you. If it does not, tell us and we will look at who comes and when. We would rather adjust early than have you sit through support that does not feel comfortable for you. This is your home and your routine, and it should feel like yours, not ours.
If you are feeling nervous about the first visit
Feeling uneasy before someone new comes into your home is completely normal, and we expect it. We move at your pace and will never push you into anything before you are ready. Most people tell us the first visit felt calmer than they expected, because it really is just two people getting to know each other.
Your first personal care appointment with us is really just the beginning of a working relationship built around your pace and your priorities. It tends to settle in from there, and most people tell us their support worker starts to feel like a familiar face fairly quickly. If you are getting ready for your own first visit, it is normal to have questions, and we are always happy to answer them before we knock on your door.
